Our second Halloween together is coming up and we already know that giving out Halloween treats to Trick-or-Treaters is a lot of fun when you have good stuff to give out. The kids last year thought our treats were so awesome that we had to start turning kids away because they were coming back 3 or 4 times. But it's a little tricky to get the good stuff when you're on a tight budget being a newly-wed-college couple. That's also the fun part though because you have to get creative.
EVERYONE gives out candy. That's what everyone expects on Halloween, of course. Well Brett and I decided that we would not give out candy, but still make the treats really awesome. So here's our big secret: Kids LOVE Kool-Aid! Well, maybe it's not a secret, but they think it's a bonus in their trick-or-treat bags.
We actually buy a generic kind, but the kids don't care. I can buy a package of 12 assorted flavors of "Kool-Aid" pouches for 99 cents at my grocery store. Today I happened upon a website that had a ton of different ways you can use Kool-Aid. So I printed out one of the recipes for finger paint and slapped it on the back of our Halloween treats. That way the kids can decide to actually drink it, or make fun crafts with it. (The paint is totally edible too!)
We are also adding other things to our Trick-or-Treat basket for giving away: mini boxes of SunMaid raisins and some mini boxes of cereal (the few I had left from another craft I'm working on for Christmas gifts, shhh!).
We are excited for Halloween!
