Our Pastime

Brett and I both love to read.

He's into American history, LDS religion, biographies, and history-based fiction.
Type of Reader: careful, analytical, thoughtful
Favorite books: Tennis Shoes Among the Nephites, George Washington biography
Favorite Authors: Chris Heimerdinger, J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis
First Book ever purchased by himself: he says probably a volume of Tennis Shoes Among the Nephites, or a hockey book

She's into fiction, fantasy, romance, the classics, and cognitive thinking.
Type of Reader: speed-reader, laughs out loud, aggressive
Favorite books: The Chronicles of Narnia, Elantris, Outliers, 20 Wishes, Harry Potter
Favorite Authors: C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Debbie Macomber, David McCullough, Malcom Gladwell
First Book ever purchased by herself: Island of the Blue Dolphins

Together we have the startings of a pretty expansive library. The biggest space-hogger in our apartment is our books. I know Kindles and iPads now have book apps and downloadable e-books, but we are a paper breed. Our dream home will have a library.

One of our favorite things to do together is read to each other. We don't have television and we don't have internet at home, so when we both have free time to spend with each other we usually read. I'll read to Brett while he's getting ready in the morning; he'll read to me while I'm making dinner. On weekends we sit comfy together on the couch and read for hours. Right now we are reading J.R.R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring in the series The Lord of the Rings. After that we look forward to reading some books from both our collections of C.S. Lewis's works.

We also try to make it a habit to read scripture together every day. On our honeymoon we began reading The Book of Mormon together. We're not perfect at reading every day, but it is a tradition we wish to carry on and eventually include our children in. Reading scripture together brings us closer to God and strengthens our relationship with each other.

We believe that reading together not only strengthens our brains but it strengthens our marriage.
