Sushi!

It's been so hot, so I've been trying to figure out good meals to prepare without heating up my house with the stove/oven. Among several other food experiments this past week we made sushi. Neither of us had made it before, but Brett was a natural at it. It was fun and yummy!

My recipe for California Roll sushi:
Ingredients
dried seaweed sheets ~ I got mine at WalMart in the International food isle
2 cups fresh-cooked white rice
thinly sliced cucumber
thinly sliced avocado
small chunks of crab meat
thinly sliced baby carrotsticks (optional)
thinly sliced ginger root (optional)

Preparation
On a cutting board lay out a piece of seaweed and spread a thin layer of rice all over one side of the sheet.
Set the seaweed sheet in front of you so that you have long sides and the short sides are at the top and bottom (like a portrait). At the top lay out a horizontal line of cucumber, avocado, and crab meat stacking them one on top of the other. Then roll the seaweed over them, pressing to keep everything tight; keep rolling all the way to the bottom end and seal the roll (the rice should be sticky enough). Cut into 1-inch pieces. Serve with soy sauce. We also found that spiced-up sweet-and-sour sauce with a couple sprinkles of some red pepper flakes was really good for dipping sauce too.
