Nauvoo Pageant

Brett is finished with summer school! Only two more semesters to go!

So now that Brett is out of school for a few weeks we are enjoying a little summer fun. We went to Carthage and Nauvoo in Illinois for a day. A lot of driving there and back in one day, but the fun we had was so worth it. Brett and I went with Kayla (Brett's little sister) and her husband Sam and Sam's brother Ammon.

We got to Carthage right before the visitor's center opened so we had a private tour with my cousin Kaelie!!! Kaelie is serving an LDS mission in that area. It was so great to catch up. She gave us a wonderful tour of the jail where Prophet Joseph Smith was martyred. For a somber place the Spirit radiates so strong. We also ran into her again later in Nauvoo before the pageant started.

In Nauvoo we were able to go through the temple. Again, the Spirit of the temple there was so strong. The pioneers that settled there in the early 1800's were so strong in their faith and so willing to give all they had both to the Lord and for each other. Though Nauvoo is just a swamp area next to the Mississippi river, they made the land a beautiful place.

We went to the brick yard and the blacksmith shop.

We walked around downtown to look at all the souvenir shops. Then we stopped in the fudge shop for some free samples and got frozen custard at Annie's. Then we went down the mosquito-infested hill to get our seats for the Nauvoo pageant. The stage was set up so as to allow the audience to see the temple behind it at the top of the hill.

We played pioneer games and watched the band play for the dancers while we waited for the pageant to start.

We ran into Brett's cousin David there and their team won the tug-of-war.

The pageant was great and I loved how they "built" the temple onstage. (I wish I got pictures of how they built it because it was pretty clever.)

Wonderful memories made.

Please excuse the poor layout. This blog program is very limiting when it comes to displaying multiple photos in one post.
